My journey in ethnic studies: Goals and outcomes

Welcome to my "Goals & Outcomes" page, where I reflect on my learning journey in ethnic studies. Discover my initial expectations, the transformative insights I gained, and my aspirations for applying this knowledge to foster greater awareness and drive positive change in society.

Before ethnic studies: Initial expectations

Before embarking on my ethnic studies course, I believed much of the information might not be essential for my understanding. My perception was that certain historical narratives and cultural discussions, while important, might not directly impact my daily life or broader societal views. I expected a class that would cover facts, but perhaps not fundamentally alter my perspective. This initial viewpoint, however, was about to be significantly challenged and ultimately transformed.

After ethnic studies: A profound shift in perspective

My understanding was altered after learning primarily about how different backgrounds have suffered through various historical and systemic injustices. The course illuminated the critical importance of understanding diverse experiences and the enduring impact of historical events on contemporary society. It became clear that this knowledge is not just "essential" but foundational to a comprehensive understanding of justice, equity, and human experience. The realization that past struggles continue to shape our present deepened my empathy and reshaped my entire outlook.

Endorsing change and action

My goals and outcomes from this project are best demonstrated by my commitment to advocating for change and action in response to negative events in our society. The five different lecture artifacts and class discussions have equipped me with the insight and motivation to speak out and contribute to efforts that address social inequalities. This includes advocating for policies, supporting community initiatives, and engaging in constructive dialogue to challenge harmful narratives and promote a more just world.

Future aspirations: Making others aware

Looking ahead, I hope to utilize the knowledge and skills gained from this project to make others aware and to encourage greater self-consciousness regarding social issues. My aspiration is to share the critical perspectives I've developed, sparking conversations and inspiring others to critically examine their own assumptions and biases. By fostering a more informed and reflective community, I believe we can collectively work towards a society that is more understanding, empathetic, and committed to equality for all.
